In Praise of Broccoli “Marathon”.
I’ve been cutting spears from these plants for months, and it was with a glad heart, that I finally decided to grub them this afternoon, thinking that they must be nearly “played out”. But I was wrong. I had another harvest waiting for me, and extensive plants which were evidently determined to go on, and go on strongly, given the chance.
By my reckoning, the plants were about 2’6″ across, and had sent up many sturdy subsidiary “branches” from soil level, all bearing crowns and sub-crowns. I’ve grown broccoli for many years, and this variety several times, and have never seen anything quite like it. Needless to say, I felt a certain sadness to be destroying such magnificent plants, and I am furiously trying to remember exactly how I prepared the ground, so that I can replicate it in future for far fewer plants.
