Spent some time making this from wood rescued from a job inside the house.
All it needs now is the plants.

Journey up was horrrendous. The M56 was solid, 5 mph traffic all the way from where we get on it to where we get off. Dentists was not problem, only a check up. The Nursery was nice. £66 of plants. Then we crawled from there to the next Garden Centre where similar plants were 4 times the price we paid. The we crawled almopst all the way home.…[Read more]

    • Golly…I sounds as horrendous as the heat we endured here yesterday Eric. good luck for next Tuesday The plants sound as though they made it worthwhile at least :good: Looking forward to seeing those settling in your new garden :good: :rose:

Sorry so many seem to be suffering from the heat. Warm here and a bit humid, but not impossibly so. Had a lot of thunder earlier on, but only 3 minutes of rain. Did nothing for the humidity though.
Hope you all survive the heatwave.
Out all day tomorrow, dentists, which is a 100 mile round trip (via a nice Nursery on the way home.).

    • Wont ask about the dentist :excruciating: but how went the Nursery visit Eric? ;-)
      HAND :rose:

Guess who missed the Thunderstorm. I slept through it. My wife said that it was lighting up the bedroom every few seconds. I did not wake up until I got really bad cramp in my calf at 5 am. damaged the muscle so been a bit painful all day.
Painted a couple of walls, one in the bedroom and one in the toilet. If they ever turn up that is where…[Read more]

    • One good thing about the excessive heat then Eric :good:
      Bravo on the painting :good:
Those early morning muscle cramps are horrid :bad: You have my sympathy … empathy even
Hope the rads come soon … nightnight :rose:

I slept well. Not hot or anything. Woke up early because of cramp, but that is nothing unusual.

  • Owdboggy posted an update 1 month ago

Nothing much on today. Too hot. Found a very well nutted Horse Chestnut on my morning walk as well as hundreds of potential Hazel nuts. Supposed to be Sweet Chestnuts too somewhere near where we amble.
Wallpapered one wall in the front bedroom where the Radiator is going to be moved to. Paint it tomorrow if it is dry.

They would have their work cut out here. The roof is smothered in moss and lichen. Trouble is it is damaging the tiles. Once the moss is off we are going to spray with some stuff which is supposed to keep moss at bay for up to 10 years.

  • Owdboggy posted an update 1 month ago

No gardening today. Spent most of the day up a ladder scraping moss off the roof. Acres more to do yet too.

    • We let the blackbirds and woodpigeons do that for us, Eric ;-) I just sweep up the next day – it’s safer than climbing a ladder ;-)

Up to now, with a bow to Hubris, the people who have done work for us have been very good and the jobs up to standard. Small town businesses have to be good in that there are fewer people to mess up and word gets round very quickly about poor service.

Ditto for us too. And last time we went, they loft insulation we wanted was soaking wet so no use to man nor beast. Wasted trip.

That’s the electrics finished. Only need to pay for it all now.
Estimate for the Gas fire and surround..£2300.
Central heating refurbishment is about £3000.
We is leaking money like nothing!

    • You have my sympathies , we found the same, every time we went to B&Q never spent under a £100, mind you its a 40+ mile round trip. It will all be worth and more cost effective :good:

electricians still not finished their work on the house. Scheduled for 2 days and they have to come back tomorrow as well. Bigger job than they anticipated. Hope the final bill is not too much more than the quote.
Not a lot of gardening done, finished soaking the Auriculas in Vine weevil stuff. Collected up a load of branches for shredding. Then…[Read more]

Not done much out there today, Painted the inside of the Summer House. Put a lot of Auriculas to soak in Vine Weevil killing stuff as I found two adults on them.
Electricians in all day, but they still have some more to do tomorrow.

  • Owdboggy posted an update 1 month, 1 week ago

Nothing much, painted the outside of the Summer House. Looks a bit better now.
Nice to be able to sit outside in the warmth while the Electricians got on wit their work. Any luck they will finish the job tomorrow.

Where they are did not seem to get any rain on it, because of the Laurel, so the leaves will never decompose as they are dry. Already got 20 or so bags of leaves from the drive, so filling more might be a problem. Most likely I will just put the leaves on the borders where the worms can do their thing.

    • Good luck then Eric…I long ago resigned myself to the inclusion of the odd sack or bin in GG for garden management :-) :rose:

Lots of leaves on the soil here. So what do you reckon is the best way to turn them into leaf mould?

      • Because I have so little space I collect healthy leaves and put them into black sacks, punctured with holes and watered occasionally. They sit discreetly in a corner near the compost bin for a few years before I can use them. The last ones had sycamore leaves, which take a long time to break down, but sadly, there :rose: won’t be any more now…[Read more]

    • Leave them on the soil, Eric if that’s where they fall. The worms will take them in and they’re cover fall all sorts of insects. Only collect the ones on the grass in the autumn for leaf mould.

Not done much gardening. Spent a lot of time either on the roof scraping off the moss or stood by the ladder watching other half on the roof scraping off the moss. Neither of us can manage to stay up their for very long, her knees, my hands.

  • We had a large number of pieces of 1 inch wide slabs, just right for making a crevice garden which are the latest thing in growing alpines.

I had to dig down a fair way to get the first piece in to the correct […]
