Boy have we had fun. The poor builders could not get the broken lintel out easily. It took them most of the day to get it free. And it was HEAVY!. Took 6 of them to lift it. The replacement is in two parts. The first is a metal beam. It took them the rest of the day to get that into place. The bricks in the wall had dropped when the old lintel had…[Read more]

We know the chap who wrote the book on Sorbus. He worked at Ness Gardens on the Wirral, which is not too far from us.

4 more windows fitted and beading added to the first ones. We asked for that, but it had not been put on their work sheets, but they did it anyway. Last window tomorrow, Biggy as it needs a new lintel fitting first.

We had a lot of Sorbus trees in our last garden with berries ranging from white to copper. We also had a fair number of Holly types including a deciduous one.. We also had a Rown with Oak leaves rather than the long thin ones. Sorbus comosa.

Thank you for that info too Eric ….. I have looked and found so many

Down here the rowan is called the mountain ash.

That is four of the nine new windows fitted. The look great. Only downside is that the self adhesive curtain hooks for net curtains will not stick to the PVC. A probem for another day. The fitters are coming back tomorrow to carry on.
Even better since it was lousy weather I managed to sit down and begin writing a story which has been rattling…[Read more] -

Been through all the Show Auriculas now. Think I have lost 3 of them altogether. Will have to wait and see if the rootless ones survive. Got some Neem oil to make a soil drench for them.
Window people are coming on Wednesday. Good as that would give us time to decorate and have it all properly dry before the Carpet fitters come in January.

Odd weather. One minute I can hardly see the screen for the sun shining in and the next it is stair rodding and blowing a hooly.Still, it has cleared all the leaves off the drive!

Ennit!
Good morning Eric

I empathise totally Eric … haven’t even attempted to garden so far even though it’s quite bright. There’s a cold, cold wind
let us hope that 2020 brings more gentle weather
then we can escape the pressures of politicking inside!

Opticians have a new machine which takes very detailed pictures of the eye. Fascinating to see my eyes with the slight macular degeneration. At least now it can be monitored in the future. No sign of cataracts either which is good. No need for new glasses either which is even better.
Completed going through the seedling Auriculas yesterday, need…[Read more] -

Owdboggy started the topic Root aphids in the forum Gardening Questions 1 week, 5 days ago
I have been cleaning up my Auricula seedlings and far too many of them have bad infestations of root aphids. Has anyone ever found an effective insecticide? At the moment I am washing all the compost off the plants in a Horticultural soft soap solution. The aphids are covered in a wax which stops normal insecticides from reaching the creatures.…[Read more]

Sunny, but very cold. Just been going through some more Auriculas for vine weevil and root aphids, found lots of both, but had to stop as I could not feel my fingers. Forecast is for more of the same for most of this week so should be able to finish off cleaning the plants.
Good week for fitting windows, but I’ll bet they don’t do it. -

Beginning to wonder. the Window people hopefully will ring soon to arrange a week to replace the windows. Cannot decorate until that is done. then we need to have two weeks before the carpet is laid so that all paint etc, is thoroughly dry. Getting tight on time. Also got to fit in visits from family as well. No good them coming when there are no…[Read more]

Hope it is a bit warmer and sunnier for folks than it is here. 0c. and foggy. Not a gardening day. Begun cleaning and then painting the skirting boards in the Living room.Dining room. The paint needs to be really hard and dry before they put down carpet. Hope it can go down over very poor vinyl tiles. Removing them would be a horrible job and then…[Read more]

Perhaps the garden you remember is the one at the Dingle Nursery? That is fairly near to Powys.
