I put my cold frames together and transferred plants from GH to harden off, bedding begonia and Surfina
I put my cold frames together and transferred as many as possible from GH, bedding begonia, geraniums, sweet peas,Surfina a few small fuchsia, french marigolds and a few other bits for hanging baskets and pots.-
They look nice and healthy

Looking very well organised SS

Some of these plants like the Surfinas, and Begonias and Petunias I bought at the end of Feb as minute plugs and brought them on from there. I have in the past grown them from seed, but seed is so expensive and I found begonia and petunias are difficult to germinate even with a propagator so I found these small plugs a few years ago 60 for £6.50…[Read more]

Thank you Haley I am getting sorted a bit better this year as last year I had no time as we had moved into this house towards the end of 2014 and spent most of last summer sorting the house out and preparing the garden and getting a greenhouse etc so this year I can concentrate a bit more on growing stuff. Ther are some pictures on my gallery of…[Read more]

You don’t have to go to a great expense to have a polytunnel ,You can build it out of2x11/2 as photo and covered with a sheet of horticultural polythene., Which they guarantee for five years.
-
You can line them out in many ways, This one I did for growing big onions, Later I grew tomatoes ,leeks etc., and started a lot of seeds and cuttings off in it.

Does anyone have any recommendations for greenhouse heaters? I’ve got the cabling for the electric cable for my greenhouse, so what would I need to plug into it?

morning all.
anybody got any ideas for a tunnel using a diused trampolene as the frame. and where to get the plastic needed from?-
Good morning Shui – I’m sure someone on the old site did this – think we thought of him as the Recycling King. There are lots of online sites selling specialised UV treated plastic sheeting to buy. I was just thinking about how you would do it, and all I could come up with was a wooden frame built in sections and covered around it – to avoid…[Read more]

Does any one else sow some seeds in a seed bed (in a greenhouse or outside) any more… or is that a thing of the past ? I have some early Leeks and Cabbage under glass cover in the greenhouse border to make use of the time they are empty.
-
I’ve got some salad leaves and winter carrots – though I’m a bit miffed the carrots haven’t germinated
I’ve just done beetroot and some yellow radishes I sowed in November, I think, are now ready to try
I should do some leeks as well – I forgot because I’ve still got a lot in the ground outside
-
Im doing 2 sowings of leeks Jane..1 now and then 1 in April ish. I normally do a big pot and leave them to grow on in that without moving them till brake the plants up to trim and plant out. I figure the early sowing in the g house can be lifted and taken out to plant without much fuss.

Yip, I do Simondo, just very small amounts of Brassicas, to get an early harvest of cauli, cabbage and broccoli, I usually germinate in a propagator then into greenhouse borders while beds are empty – ish.
-
What I’m chatting on about is more about using the soil borders as the sowing seed bed and then transplanting from there outside thus using the G house as a large cloche if you get my drift .
Once upon a time sowing into a permanent seedling raising bed was normal for lots of things to then be planted out from and now you don’t hear many doing…[Read more]

I don’t know anyone now that still starts plants off in a seed bed, it could be a bit hit and miss with a gradual build up of pests in the bed, and at the mercy of the weather, now sterile compost , sterile seed trays or pots produce strong healthy plants. I have to be honest there are new comers on our allotments ,and other local sites that would…[Read more]

Interesting how things change Tony. I remember being given some left over sprout plants from a plot holder back in the late 80s and they were bare rooted from his little patch that he sowed them direct into under a cloche. I find it has a place now and again for the more hardy things like early cabbage and leeks. I use it as a Quick and cheep…[Read more]

Ah, with you now Simon, ummmm, in that case no, not in the greenhouse, do it outside under cloches for a few successional things though. Just a tad too early and cold yet.

I was surprised to read your replies regarding the wind problems you where experiencing with your poly tunnels because we have had our P/T 20 years with the same cover that actually gave up in January this year
but I have to say the tunnel was surrounded by some conifer trees that seemed to have protected the tunnel I am in the process of cutting…[Read more]

Hi Gibbon
Your idea of plastic netting is that the same as enviro mesh we use to keep out pests as small as carrot fly? Fantastic stuff n does exactly as you say.

At the gardening club last night a group of us were talking about polytunnels, condensation seemed to be a problem and not enough ventilation. One of our members says there are covers for tunnels now on the market that are treated so the condensation runs to the sides instead of dripping every where.Mine is home made the roof is covered with clear…[Read more]
