The Running Hare: The secret life of farmland is a book by John Lewis-Stempel, given to me by a friend. I loved it :-) It tells the story of part of Lewis-Stempel’s life when he decided to go back to farming ‘the old way’, allowing wild flowers in his field among the wheat. He wanted wildlife, too and he got it. It’s an idyll of course as the country’s agricultural needs today would be highly impossible without modern machinery and methods. However, knowing so many clickers and their gardening methods, I like to think we are all contributing to this idyll. A highly recommended book.

I wasn’t too keen on the combine episode :-( I wonder if he has kept up the good work, I doubt it somehow. Must ask my friend who lives in Herefordshire.
